The
tower is an impressive cylindrical marble structure dating from the
Hellenistic period. There is a ground floor and three upper storeys,
and the whole builidng is surrounded by a wall enclosing a square site.
The
tower is visible from much of the south-eastern part of the island
and from the sea, and so it is thought that is must have been a lookout
post. Beacons may have been lit at this point to warn of the approach
of pirates.
Whatever its role, the tower of Chimaros has been much celebrated in
folk poetry.
The tower is located in the area of Mount Zas.
