In
the fertile area of Livadi close to the villages of Potamia (kato,
mesi and ano) stands below the road the church of Agios Mamas.
This is one of the oldest churches on Naxos, dating back to the 9th
century. It is important for its architecural form, which is "cross
in square", while it has notable sculptures and traces of murals.
It is believed to have been the cathedral of the Ortodox before the
Frankish conquest and to have been converted into a Catholic church
in 1207. Agios Mamas, protector of shepherds, is regarderd as a patron
saint particularly of Asia minor, Cyprus and Naxos.
